Why fade before your cover-up?
Not every tattoo needs to be completely removed. Sometimes, all you need is to lighten the existing ink enough that a new tattoo can be placed over the top without the old design showing through.
That's where laser fading comes in.
Rather than fully removing a tattoo — which takes more sessions and a longer timeline — laser fading targets the existing ink just enough to give your cover-up artist a cleaner, lighter canvas to work on. The result is a cover-up tattoo that looks genuinely new, with better colour vibrancy and more creative freedom for your artist.
I offer laser tattoo fading at my private studio in Idle, Bradford, using a professional Q-switched Nd:YAG laser. Whether you're working with a cover-up artist already or still planning, I can help you figure out how many fading sessions you'll need and what results are realistic for your ink.
Our Laser Removal Treatments
Cover-up tattoos are only as good as the canvas they're placed on. Dark, saturated ink beneath a new design can cause it to look muddy, limit the colours your artist can use, and make the original tattoo visible within a few years as the cover-up fades.
Laser fading before a cover-up:
-
Gives your tattoo artist far more creative freedom with design and colour
-
Allows lighter colours — including whites, pastels, and fine line work — to show up properly
-
Reduces the risk of the old tattoo bleeding through over time
-
Often means your cover-up needs far less ink, resulting in a cleaner healed result
-
Can open up placement options that weren't possible with the original tattoo
Many professional tattoo artists now recommend laser fading as standard practice before any significant cover-up work — especially for darker, more saturated pieces.

5-Step Fading & Cover-up Process
The road to a fresh new start begins with a carefully planned fading process. Here is how we work together to prepare your skin for the perfect cover-up.
01
Consultation
We'll look at your tattoo, discuss your cover-up plans, and I'll give you an honest estimate of how many sessions are likely needed and what level of fading is achievable.
02
Patch test
Before your first full treatment, I'll carry out a patch test on a small area of the tattoo to confirm how your skin and the ink respond to the laser.
03
Fading sessions
Each session takes 15–30 minutes depending on the tattoo size. You'll need to wait at least 6–8 weeks between sessions to let your skin fully heal and the fading to complete.
04
Progress review
After each session we'll review the fading and decide whether you're ready for your cover-up or whether another round would be beneficial. I'll never push unnecessary sessions.
05
Ready for your cover-up
Once the fading has reached the right level, you're free to go ahead and book with your cover-up artist. The skin typically needs to be fully healed for at least 8 weeks before tattooing over a lasered area.
How many fading sessions will I need before my cover-up?
Far fewer than you might think. Unlike full removal — which aims to eliminate all visible ink — fading for a cover-up only needs to lighten the tattoo to a level your artist can confidently work over.
For most clients, this means 2–4 sessions spaced 6–8 weeks apart, depending on:
-
The colour and saturation of the existing tattoo
-
How large the tattoo is and how complex the cover-up design will be
-
Your skin type and how quickly you respond to treatment
-
The experience and preference of your cover-up artist
I always recommend getting in touch with your intended cover-up artist first, so we can align on the target lightness before starting fading sessions. This makes the whole process more efficient — and saves you money.
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sessions are typically needed for laser tattoo removal?
The number of sessions varies depending on the tattoo's size, age, ink density, and your skin type. Most full removals require between 6 to 12 sessions, spaced 6-8 weeks apart to allow for proper healing and optimal results.
Is laser tattoo removal safe for dark skin tones?
Yes, we use a Q-switched Nd:YAG laser, which is specifically safe and effective for all skin types, including darker complexions. It targets the ink particles without damaging the surrounding skin tissue.
How much does laser tattoo removal cost?
Costs are calculated per session based on the size and complexity of the tattoo. We offer a transparent, no-pressure pricing structure during our initial consultation to ensure you are comfortable with the investment.
Does laser tattoo removal hurt?
While it is a professional procedure, we take great care to minimize discomfort. Most people describe the sensation as a quick, sharp snap or a mild sunburn feeling. We use a topical numbing cream to ensure your comfort.
What is the aftercare like after a laser session?
Aftercare is essential for a smooth recovery. We provide a detailed aftercare guide that includes how to keep the area clean, avoid picking, and use specific ointments to prevent scabbing and infection.
